DON’T SLEEP: Jon Phonics x BUG “Jack Duckworth” (co-prod. by Jon Phonics & BUG) [VIDEO]

Team PIK‘s Jon Phonics had a bananas year in 2011. He dropped some of the biggest jawns of the year in his Chakra Sounds single “Bruck Out”/”The One” (which landed him a spot on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Bubblers 7 compilation) and the mix  “Gutter Beats For Rapping” showcasing slaps he had available for purchase on the Producers I Know Bandcamp.

Jon’s new project is the “Grid Games EP” which first dropped on PRISM February 6th but went into wide release back on February 20th. It shows off the full range of his immense creativity and versatility, featuring collaborations with PIK’s own Pete Cannon, former team member Jeeks and BUG. It also features remixes from Kidkanevil, Pedestrian & Ghost Mutt. The digital version will include additional tracks featuring S-Type, Jaisu, SirOJ and Bobby Tank. Here’s the video for the lead track off the “Grid Games EP” called “Jack Duckworth”. Don’t sleep!

DON’T SLEEP: Radius “Sleeping Wide Awake” [BEAT TAPE]

Radius recently dropped a new beat tape via Chicago’s Moment Sound Blog called “Sleeping Wide Awake”. Here was the description given on said site:

No doubt our society is complacent. Is Hollywood’s never ceasing fascination with the walking dead any wonder? Radius’ Sleeping Wide Awake is a call from a reflecting awareness – wake up. In his own words: “people are zombies ”sleepwalking” and so much going on around them is here to awaken them, they just need a change of diet. Mentally, physically and spiritually I feel music is that cure.”. In essence this is what hip hop has been about since the get (despite what clear-channel and mainstream “you are getting sleeeeeeepy” thrust repeats would have the world believe). Knock Knock. Who’s there? Beats with swagger before “swag” became yet another example of how late pop exploitation decides what’s cool. Radius’ tracks capture a certain meditative quality that is neither ambient or new-agey, a something-a-ruther often missed in music of technological mediums. Chopped and pitched samples, vinyl static, classic breaks, steps without quantization, piercing envelopes, – all played and recorded in real time. Raw. Simply put, Sleeping Wide Awake is a hip hop instrumental album from a true head for true heads and beyond. Enjoy.
